Model Railway Layout Construction

Tools for model railroading, the model railroader’s workshop

As we will see, in addition to typical model railway items (locomotives, wagons, buildings, etc…) we will need various tools and general-purpose DIY materials (such as glues, nails, screws, drills, etc…).

We will see what is necessary later, but speaking of where to buy, let’s add a few considerations:

  • we make extensive use of tools that are otherwise ‘useful around the house’
  • we avoid crazy purchases of heavy workshop machinery
  • we avoid dangerous / difficult to use machinery

We haven’t yet addressed where we will place our layout, but in reality, we must think that there will be 2 spaces to use:

  • where we will place the model railway layout
  • where we will have our small workshop

In fact, if possible, the 2 areas should be adjacent but separate, or at least separate, because some processes produce dust, sawdust, dirt, paint splashes, solvent odors, etc… all enemies of the actual layout itself, which must be protected as much as possible from any potential contamination.

Let’s imagine having a simple workshop with tools (in the garage, basement, attic, or at the end of the garden).

Tools for woodworking in model railroading

To build the wooden structure of the layout, we will use standard DIY carpentry tools.

If you decide to use our DIAP Consulting service to build your layout, we will guide you on which tools to use and a simple, cost-effective method for creating the wooden support structure for the tracks.
